Feedings & Shows
Animal enrichment is one of our highest priorities. Feedings, demonstrations, and keeper talks occur throughout the day, some scheduled and some spontaneous. Download the Huxley Paleozoo app from your device's app store and plan your day around these exciting showcases!
Alongside these, various other feedings and training sessions can happen spontaneously throughout the day.
Seven-Day Feedings
- 9:00 AM - Carcharocles Feeding
Though still young, our Carcharocles are growing fast and demand a hefty appetite. We feed them each one live tuna, around a quarter of their size. If you're in the aquarium in the morning, this is a must-see. - 10:30 AM - Tyrannosaurus Feeding
Our most famous family eats like royalty! Get to the T. rex paddock early to secure a seat or standing space in our viewing auditorium. In the wild, our tyrannosaurs would be actively hunting Triceratops, Ankylosaurus, Edmontosaurus, and potentially even other Tyrannosaurus! Here, we've been able to engineer living muscle tissue, which lets our rexes fine dine without worry. - 2:30 PM - Velociraptor Feeding
We feed our raptors with "Delties", small remote-controlled vehicles with meat inside. This offers a unique opportunity to view natural hunting behaviors and prey restraint in action. - 5:30 PM, - Pteranodon and Anhanguera Feeding
Our sea pterosaurs love food, perhaps a little too much. We toss fish into the water for the Pteranodon to dive after, while the Anhanguera get hand-fed. This prevents conflict between the two; the Pteranodon get pretty rowdy when food is involved. - 6:30 PM - Dimetrodon Feeding
In the wild, Dimetrodon would roam the banks of river valleys, feeding on fish, amphibians, and potentially other synapsids. Our Dimetrodon get a smorgasbord of fish and various meats, hidden throughout their enclosure. Betting on which one finds the most is technically gambling and is not allowed.
Monday-Wednesday-Friday
-
9:00 AM - Mosasaurus Feeding
Hop on a boat on weekday mornings and enter our Mosasaurus's sea pen to watch us feed her! She eats a large meal every other day, and being able to see her up close is quite a sight. We promise the boat will not capsize. -
11:30 - Playtime with Boarcroc and Dogrcroc
Observe as we test a new enrichment program for our Saharan land crocodiles! Modern crocodilians are known to engage in play behavior, and our crocs are no different. Our Araripesuchus, Anatosuchus, and Kaprosuchus interact with various enrichment items, their keepers, and each other, surprisingly evocative of dogs at times. -
1:30 PM - Triceratops Jousting
To accomodate our more temperamental Ceratopsids, we built a massive armored vehicle affectionately nicknamed the Juggernaut. Our Triceratops beat the crap out of it so they don't do it to each other! This event only occurs during the Triceratops rutting season, from February to May.
Weekend Only
- 8:30 AM - Brontosaurus Demonstration
Arrive at Huxley early on weekend mornings to meet some of the largest animals in the park - the Brontosaurus. Get up close to one at a special viewing platform and learn more about what makes sauropods, among the largest animals to ever exist, really bloody cool. - 3:30 PM - Meet Kirk
Kirk is a subadult Pachycephalosaurus. He lives in his own paddock in the Hell Creek section, due to not getting along with the others. He's pretty docile around people, allowing for a unique opportunity for us to show off what's unique about Pachycephalosaurus. - 4:00 PM - Terror Bird Feeding and Keeper Talk
We feed both our terror birds at the same time of day - the smaller, South American Llallawavis first, followed by the larger North American Titanis. As this happens, their keepers will discuss what caring for these birds is like, and what made terror birds so successful.
Saturday Only
- 9:15 AM - Brachiosaurus Canopy Demonstration
The Vista View Canopy is only accessible during choice hours on weekends. And, on Saturdays only, you have the chance to meet Huxley’s largest terrestrial inhabitants - Brachiosaurus. Our pair are extremely docile and are comfortable being hand-fed by strangers. Come to this rare opportunity and learn a thing or two from our specialists! - 1:00 PM - Flight Show
Located in an arena near the Liaoning aviaries, learn about how two independent groups of archosaur took to the air - birds and pterosaurs. Live representatives from both groups will highlight the specializations each has towards a life in the air, and show off some of the feats each has accomplished with this innovation.
