Zalmoxes

Among the bizarre island fauna of Cretaceous Romania is this small ornithopod. Zalmoxes and its relatives likely lived on different islands and show variation in size - Zalmoxes shows insular dwarfism compared to its relatives.

Named for the Dacian god Zalmoxis, Z. robustus is known from many isolated remains, showing it to be more robust than its relatives, but still a small herbivore. Like other rhabdodonts, it was probably common in the forests of Cretaceous Europe.
