Ornithomimus
Ornithomimus was the first named ornithomimid, giving the group of "bird mimics" its name. And it fits - ornithomimids superficially resemble ostriches with more obvious hands and longer tails. They also lived similarly to ostriches, being primary herbivorous omnivores. Ornithomimus's arms are long and have large hands well-adapted for gripping. Its legs are long and its feet have arctometatarsi (metatarsals pinched into "shock-absorbers") - an adaptation for running. It has larg wing feathers and branching feathers going down the upper side of the tail. The underside of the tail and the legs are covered by bare skin. Ornithomimus can be found in the Hell Creek exhibit. |
