Chaoyangopterus

Chaoyangopterus is an unusual, oft-overlooked pterosaur from China. Its position on the pterosaur family tree has been a bit uncertain, being variously allied with Nyctosaurus, Pteranodon, and Tapejara. As fossils of Chaoyangopterus's relative were found, however, it became clear it belongs to its own group - Chaoyangopteridae, closely related to Azhdarchids.

Chaoyangopterids are relatively small and long-limbed pterosaurs. At least some of them had tall crested skulls. Like its larger cousins the Azhdarchids, Chaoyangopterus is a primarily terrestrial animal, with wings suited for flapping flight instead of soaring flight. It roams the forest floor opportunistically eating anything edible it can find.

A trio of Chaoyangopterus live in the Jehol Aviary. Their curious nature makes them a favorite with guests and the bane of the other inhabitants. Chaoyangopterus also stars in the Flight Show.
